22 Weeks: Sausage Fingers and Little Kicks

Baby is the size of: A spaghetti squash

How far along are you: 22 weeks, 4 days

What’s happening with baby: From Babycenter, “Your baby is starting to look like a miniature newborn. His or her lips, eyelids, and eyebrows are becoming more distinct, and tiny tooth buds are even developing beneath the gums. You baby’s eyes have formed, but the irises still lack pigment. At 11 inches, your baby weighs almost 1 pound. If you could see inside your womb, you’d be able to spot the fine hair (lanugo) that covers your baby’s body and the deep wrinkles on his or her skin, which will be filled in before birth by a nice padding of fat. Inside your baby’s belly, the pancreas — essential for the production of some important hormones — is developing steadily.” Ok, am I the only one freaked out by the idea of something with teeth, inside of me?

Due date: February 3rd

Maternity clothes: Probably 90%. I still have a few shirts that are long enough and some dresses I wear over leggings, and none of my cardigans are specifically maternity. I think I may need to make another trip to the consignment store, though, because this baby is getting big enough that lots of my non-mat shirts are on their last leg — even my maternity jeans I stupidly purchased at 8 weeks along, are almost too tight. Fun! Too big for big lady clothes!

Sleep: I’ve experienced my first “I’m up at 3 a.m., let me just go pee, OK no, I’m UP, UP” night this week. I’m still exhausted most of the time and have no problem falling asleep when I try — and most of the time when I don’t try — so here’s hoping that night was a fluke, at least for a while.

Best moment this week: I’m definitely feeling this little peanut kick me from the outside. He’s not consistent enough for Mister Mister to be able to feel him — I’ll feel one or two kicks (?) and then nothing — but I really enjoy that he’s getting so much stronger now.

Worst moment this week: Sitting with my left foot under me on the couch, extracting it, and finding sausage foot.

What are you looking forward to: We’ve ordered all our nursery furniture now, so I’m just eager for it to come so we can really start setting up that room. I’m an overachiever, so I’m shooting for a “nursery due date” of 30 weeks. I’m taking an IKEA, and possibly Target, trip this weekend to get some little things, but otherwise, the major decorative stuff has all been purchased, as well. Also, one of my friends started asking about my shower, so I’m pretty stoked about that.

Food cravings: Mexican food (even though it gives me awful heartburn) and ice cream.

Food/smell aversions: Does the smell of my dog’s farts in my face in bed at night count?

What do you miss: Still all the same stuff as last week: Being able to eat tomato soup, drink orange juice, etc. without crippling acid reflux. Coffee. Diet soda. Being able to bend over without having to squat, grunt, and possibly pee myself. Sleeping on my back without worrying if I’m killing my baby.

Symptoms: Buttock pain, heartburn/reflux, swollen fingers and occasionally feet, bigger feet in general, more round ligament pain, oil slick skin/acne.

Gender: Boy

Belly button: Even closer to an outtie than last week. (Side story: Mister Mister told me last night that when he was in high school, some guy told him a friend of his got in an accident and ruined his Audi, and Mister Mister didn’t know that an Audi was a car, so he thought he meant it ruined his outtie bellybutton. And he thought, “That’s a really weird accident”).

Rings: These might have to come off sometime very soon.
